Understanding Dyslexia and How The Canopy School Helps Children Thrive

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, a time to highlight this common learning difference and the resources available to help children succeed. Dyslexia is a neurological condition that affects reading, spelling and writing abilities. It does not impact intelligence, but requires specialized approaches to help students unlock their potential. Estimates show that approximately 15-20% of children in the United States have dyslexia, highlighting the importance of accessible and effective support systems.

Dyslexia can be challenging, but with the right treatment, children can learn to read and thrive academically. Evidence-based approaches for dyslexia often include targeted reading instruction, multisensory activities and consistent practice. Therapy with trained professionals who use structured literacy methods, like the Orton-Gillingham approach, is a proven path to progress.

The Canopy School is our newest educational solution designed to support students with a range of learning differences, including dyslexia. Head of School Kara White shares our vision: “At The Canopy School, we are committed to meeting children where they are, providing an individualized academic environment that believes all students can reach their full potential. We see each child as capable, and we are here to help them tap into their unique potential thrive.”

The Canopy School is an accredited, supportive environment designed to nurture each student’s unique strengths. Our approach to dyslexia is distinct in its level of personalization and consistency. Dyslexia therapy is offered five days a week, blending small group and one-on-one sessions with classroom learning. Class sizes of 10-12 students ensure that every child gets the attention they need, with teachers implementing customized accommodations tailored to each learner.
