Canopy Children’s Solutions’ (Canopy) Chris Furlow, Ph. D, BCBA-D, LBA, will be listed as a contributing author for a clinical perspectives article set to be published in the prestigious Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The piece is titled, “Family Accommodations and Severe Problem Behavior: Considering Parent-Based Intervention to Expand Function-Based Treatment.”
“While this research strictly focused on individuals with autism and other neurological disorders, this is certainly relevant to parents of children who exhibit severe problem behaviors like self-injury and aggression,” says Furlow. “We examined how a parent’s compliance to the behavioral demands of a child and the avoidance of situations that lead up to these behaviors can often reinforce the escalation of severe behavior. Our hypothesis is through personalized training that parents can be taught how to use behavior methods to approach what triggers these problem behaviors, rather than to give in and potentially reinforce the problematic behaviors of their child.”
Furlow has trained at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions for autism-related therapies including the Marcus Autism Center at Emory University and the Kennedy Krieger Institute at Johns Hopkins. His research is well documented throughout various professional journals related to psychology and behavior analysis.
Furlow is an alumni of Louisiana State University and the Chicago School of Professional Psychology at Los Angeles. He completed his doctoral degree in the School of Psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi. Furlow is the clinic manager for Canopy Autism Solutions’ Early Intervention Clinic at the Center of Excellence in Jackson. He is a native of Slidell, La, and current resident of the Madison area.
