Lives of children Transformed plus their families
Canopy’s mission is to help children thrive and families overcome extraordinary challenges by providing a continuum of behavioral health, educational and family support solutions.
More families than ever before are turning to Canopy to provide meaningful solutions for their children. We are committed to invest in upstream solutions through programs like LINK and in-CIRCLE, while preparing for the broader integration of Canopy Anywhere, a technology-driven mental health screener, in schools across the state. With the opening of new CARES School campuses in Biloxi and Hattiesburg, we are expanding access to specialized education and therapeutic care. Having the state’s only non-profit psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) allows us the opportunity to create public/private partnerships and reimagine best practices that are child-focused and outcomes-driven. Our growing teams are strengthening our capacity and deepening our commitment to excellence. Canopy remains grounded in purpose and powered by a team dedicated to building brighter futures for Mississippi’s children.

Canopy Opens New CARES School Campuses in Biloxi and Hattiesburg
In 2024, Canopy marked two major milestones in its mission to provide innovative educational solutions for children with behavioral health challenges. With the opening of CARES School Biloxi and the expansion of CARES School Hattiesburg into the new Trustmark Educational Center, Canopy has deepened its commitment to meeting the complex needs of students who struggle in traditional classrooms.
On August 5, 2024, CARES School Biloxi opened its doors on the campus of Lopez Middle School, becoming the third CARES School in Mississippi. Led by Principal Patricia Keaney and Director of Educational Solutions Sean Brewer, the school currently serves 12 students from 12 school districts along the Gulf Coast and has capacity to grow. Just weeks later, on September 16, Canopy celebrated the grand opening of the newly relocated and expanded CARES School Hattiesburg. Made possible by a $3 million investment from Trustmark, the new facility—named the Trustmark Educational Center—was designed with intention to meet the academic, emotional and social needs of students from 18 Pine Belt-area school districts.
For more than 30 years, Canopy’s CARES Schools—located in Jackson, Hattiesburg, and now Biloxi—have served as a beacon of hope for children whose behavioral health challenges require more than what traditional schools can offer. Accredited by the Mississippi Department of Education, these schools provide small class sizes, licensed teachers, trauma-informed classrooms and integrated therapeutic services. Specialized support for students, family engagement, and a multidisciplinary approach ensure that each student receives the individualized care they need to thrive.
The grand openings of both schools were celebrated with strong community support. In Biloxi, Congressman Mike Ezell, state leaders, school superintendents and local officials gathered for the August 28 ribbon cutting, highlighting the importance of Canopy’s partnership with the Biloxi School District. In Hattiesburg, Canopy CEO Dr. John D. Damon and Trustmark CEO Duane Dewey shared how their partnership reflects a shared belief in building a brighter future for Mississippi’s children.
These new campuses not only expand Canopy’s geographic reach but also enhance the organization’s full continuum of care, which includes outpatient therapy, family preservation services and advocacy centers. Together, CARES School Biloxi and the Trustmark Educational Center at CARES School Hattiesburg represent Canopy’s ongoing investment in the potential of every child—no matter their challenges. As Canopy celebrates 112 years of service, these expansions stand as a powerful reminder of our vision: to help every child become a success story.
Preventing child abuse is a community responsibility. At its core, child abuse prevention involves creating environments where children are safe, supported and nurtured so they can thrive. Canopy is committed to advancing this mission through a multi-tiered approach that includes primary, secondary and tertiary prevention strategies. As a State Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA), Canopy gains powerful tools, connections and resources to strengthen and expand this work across Mississippi.
The benefits of being a State Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America are extensive. It provides Canopy with access to a national platform for policy advocacy, research and program development. It also allows for participation in collective impact initiatives and professional learning communities that inform strategy and scale innovation. Moreover, the PCAA affiliation enhances Canopy's credibility and visibility as a statewide leader in child abuse prevention, helping to attract funding, partnerships and public support.
Ultimately, child abuse prevention is a shared responsibility that thrives on collaboration, innovation and community engagement. Through its role as the Mississippi Chapter of PCAA, Canopy is better equipped to lead this charge, ensuring that every child in Mississippi grows up safe, supported and full of hope for the future.
Through Canopy’s behavioral health solutions, children are able to find the help they need to thrive in their homes and communities. Canopy provides solutions for a wide variety of childhood behavioral issues through a continuum of care.

A teenage girl has been receiving therapy for about a year at Canopy's Behavioral Health Clinic. She came with severe depression and discord with her mother. After many family and individual sessions, she is thriving! She was recently chosen as one of a select group of high school students to represent Mississippi in Washington D.C., as part of an upcoming initiative led by the Governor. She is graduating from high school, enrolling in community college, and is getting along much better with her family. She described her relationship with her mother as, "besties!"

"Before my son began attending CARES School, his school was calling me almost daily to pick him up because of violent behavior. Because of his violence and multiple suspensions, I was unable to work a full-time job. Now enrolled back at his school, I have stopped receiving calls to pick him up, he has not been suspended, and his violent behavior at home has virtually disappeared. The care he received at CARES School has not only changed his life, but our life as a family for the better."
A goal without a pathway is just a wish!
The three pillars of hope are: goals, pathways, and willpower.

Starting in the winter of 2023, LINK team members in McComb began assisting a single mother without stable housing. LINK was able to connect her with Section 8 housing, later receiving a housing voucher and apartment approval. The mother was also connected to employment opportunities and obtained two part-time jobs.
Because of financial literacy and money management skills provided by LINK team members, the mother was able to pay deposits and her first month's bills. She mentioned the need for a twin mattress and a baby bed, and LINK team members, along with community partners, were able to provide these immediately—along with sheets, a kitchen table, and other items.

Canopy engaged the Monitor Institute by Deloitte for a three-phased strategic planning process to help the organization build a shared understanding of where we are today, make key decisions around Canopy's new strategy, and build an operational plan to support our new strategy.
We want to expand our work in Mississippi, stay on the leading edge of innovative best practices, and proactively pursue partnerships to meet children where they are.
We will improve access to high-quality care and expand Canopy's reach by pursuing three key priorities:
Canopy will seek to be a leader in driving innovation in mental wellness by developing a robust process for exploring innovative ideas; evaluating ideas for feasibility, impact, and financial viability; and adapting internal structures, processes, and resourcing to steward new innovations from concept to launch.
Canopy will expand its sphere of influence by pursuing strategic partnerships that will result in increased reach and access to high-quality care in Mississippi—starting by exploring potential partnerships to meet children where they are, first in schools and then in pediatricians' offices.
Canopy will invest in capabilities to enhance our effectiveness in the rapidly changing healthcare landscape. Specifically, we will build our measurement, data, and learning capabilities and our clinical expertise to stay on the leading edge of practice, and invest in communications to drive name recognition, raise awareness of services, and gain referrals.
As we close out Year 2 of our five-year strategic plan, we are proud to share meaningful progress toward our long-term vision: to be the premier behavioral health provider and the go-to source for innovative solutions that transform lives. Grounded in a 10-year vision set by our Board, this plan has become our blueprint for impact. Over the past two years, we have not only clarified the metrics that matter most—we've also built robust systems to track them. For the first time in our 112-year history, Canopy is operating with this level of precision, alignment, and accountability across all levels of the organization.
Each of our three strategic pillars is supported by clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), tracked in real time through internal dashboards. As of the end of Year 2, we have achieved 78% of the goals under Pillar 1: Strengthening Our Roots, focused on enhancing organizational effectiveness. Under Pillar 2: Building the Canopy, aimed at expanding our sphere of influence, we've completed 67% of our objectives. Most notably, Pillar 3: Pursuing New Growth, dedicated to driving innovation, is at 100% for the year's goals. These milestones reflect our commitment to adapting and evolving in service of children and families across Mississippi.
In 2024, Canopy joined forces with the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS) and the Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) to take bold action in response to a growing and urgent need: creating a new level of care for children with severe mental health challenges—care that previously did not exist within the state.
Through this partnership, we've laid the foundation for a transformative expansion at Canopy's CARES Center in Jackson. Funded by a historic $20 million allocation from the state and matched by $5 million of congressionally directed funding, this project will add 20 new psychiatric residential treatment beds, specifically designed to serve adolescents who are considered "hard-to-place" due to complex trauma histories and high-acuity behavioral needs.
This expansion includes the construction of three new residential cottages and the renovation of existing facilities. Once complete, CARES Center will grow from 60 to 80 total beds, becoming Mississippi's premier trauma-focused facility for youth who are not appropriate for acute hospitalization, but whose needs far exceed current residential options.
These youth, often in the custody of the state, face severe placement challenges. The project directly addresses these systemic gaps by providing specialized care in a safe, stable and therapeutic environment.
This new level of "sub-acute" care fills a critical gap in the mental health continuum, complementing existing services and allowing for a smoother transition from high-acute hospitalization to community-based support.
Canopy is proud to provide the operational infrastructure and clinical expertise to bring this vision to life. Our investment in this initiative is a continuation of our commitment to ensuring that every child in Mississippi has access to compassionate, comprehensive, and effective mental health care.
As we look to the future, we are energized by the momentum behind this project. The CARES Center expansion represents more than bricks and mortar—it is a bold step forward in transforming children's mental health services in Mississippi. We are grateful to our partners at MDCPS and DMH, and to the state and federal leaders who recognize the importance of investing in our youth.

For our family, supporting Canopy Children's Solutions isn't just something we do — it's part of who we are. Our legacy with this remarkable organization spans three generations and nearly a century of care for Mississippi's children and families.
It began with our grandfather, Floyd Sulser, Sr., who was a longtime supporter of the Mississippi Children's Home. Our father, Floyd Sulser, Jr., carried that legacy forward by joining the board in the mid-1990s. Kristen Sulser, followed soon after, serving in the late '90s, and Lauren had the honor of becoming a board member not long after. Canopy has been woven into the fabric of our family's story, and we're proud to continue the tradition of service.
We've seen firsthand how Canopy changes lives. Families we've known personally have been transformed through Canopy's adoption services. The organization stands in the gap when family systems need support, providing vital solutions to children and families at the moments they need them most. There is truly nothing more important than that.
What we deeply appreciate about Canopy is that it acts as a lifeline when there is nowhere else to turn. Whether it's offering mental health services, educational support, social work or simply providing a safe refuge, Canopy is there to meet the needs of families across Mississippi. The variety and depth of its programs are nothing short of extraordinary.
Supporting Canopy is, for us, both a duty and a joy. We believe that volunteering and engaging with organizations like Canopy strengthens our communities and builds a better Mississippi for the next generation. If you love this state, you support those who are doing the hard work of caring for all its children and families — every single day.
Our father and grandfather's generosity set a clear example for us. We often recall our grandfather's words: "To whom much is given, much is expected." That belief is at the core of everything we do. And we believe that by working together, the lives we can change will be nothing short of amazing.
One of the values we hold most dear is love — a lesson passed down through our family and reinforced by the care and compassion we've witnessed at Canopy. The love the staff shows to every child, every family, inspires us to stay involved and give back in whatever ways we can.
We're also a family that believes in second chances. Life is difficult, and for many children and families in Mississippi, it's made harder by physical, emotional or financial struggles. Canopy offers them a way forward — a way to hope. Being a part of spreading that hope is something we treasure deeply.
Our family has had the privilege of being involved in Canopy's growth through the years. Kristen played a role in early fundraising efforts, including organizing limited-edition artist prints — efforts that helped pave the way for the many dynamic, statewide events Canopy now hosts. Watching those seeds grow into such powerful initiatives is a testament to Canopy's mission and reach.
Looking ahead, we're especially excited about the future of The Canopy School. Every child is unique, and the need for specialized services continues to grow. We hope to see families across the state gain access to a full spectrum of resources — all close to home. One of the greatest challenges is simply helping people understand the scope of what Canopy provides. Awareness is key.
To those considering how to get involved, we encourage you to attend a Canopy event and experience the organization's impact firsthand. Whether it's through fundraising, volunteering, or board service, there are so many meaningful ways to support this mission. Serving on the board has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, leading to lifelong friendships and countless memories.
Most importantly, none of this would be possible without Canopy's exceptional staff. Their dedication and leadership are the heartbeat of the organization. It has been an honor to play even a small part in the Canopy story, and we are excited for all that lies ahead.

SOAR in 2024 was Canopy's annual Employee Wellness Program, thoughtfully designed to promote a balanced and fulfilling work-life experience. Throughout the year, employees were guided by local Wellness Navigators and engaged in quarterly themes that addressed key aspects of holistic well-being.
In Q1, the focus on physical wellness encouraged healthier habits and lifestyle choices. Q2 shifted to professional wellness, offering opportunities for growth and career development. During Q3, financial wellness took center stage, providing tools and resources to build financial confidence and stability. The year concluded with a focus on emotional wellness in Q4, supporting mental health and resilience. This intentional, year-long journey equipped employees with practical strategies to care for themselves—both personally and professionally.
2024 HIGHLIGHTS
Learning & Development
In 2024, Canopy continued to invest in the growth and development of our greatest asset—our people. Through intentional programs and robust training, we empowered employees to strengthen their skills, embrace leadership opportunities, and deliver on our mission with excellence. Our Aspiring Leaders program remained a cornerstone of this effort, nurturing emerging talent across the organization.
The 2023 cohort saw two participants promoted into supervisory roles, while the 2024 cohort celebrated the graduation of eight team members. Participant feedback highlighted the program’s transformational impact, with employees gaining confidence, finding their voice, and stepping into leadership both professionally and personally. As one graduate shared, “This program has made me blossom from a caterpillar to a butterfly.” Additionally, we achieved 100% compliance with new hire and annual training requirements, reflecting our ongoing commitment to operational excellence and continuous learning.
In 2024, Canopy's Youth Ambassador Program continued to inspire high school students across Mississippi by centering its efforts around Destination Hope—a framework designed to build and sustain hope. A total of 169 students in grades 9–12 participated across six communities: Greenville, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Olive Branch and Starkville. Through this initiative, students explored their own goals and learned how mindset, pathways and willpower play a role in achieving personal aspirations.
A core element of the program focused on practical goal-setting, using the Destination Hope workbook to guide students in identifying and pursuing their individual "hope goals." Students also engaged in discussions around the impact of sleep, nutrition, and self-care on their ability to remain resilient and thrive both inside and outside the classroom. The program was supported by 21 dedicated Canopy team members who served on the Youth Ambassador Leadership Committee, facilitating sessions and guiding student progress in each region.
Throughout the year, Youth Ambassadors also led a variety of community service projects, including toy, canned food, bedding and hygiene drives. These student-led efforts not only addressed real needs in their communities but also provided valuable, hands-on experience in leadership, organization, and service—further reinforcing their sense of purpose and potential.
