Designated

the Newest State Chapter

In 2023, Canopy Children's Solutions proudly announced its designation as the newest state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA), the nation's oldest and largest organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect. As the Mississippi Chapter, Canopy will leverage innovative research, advocate for meaningful policy changes, and raise awareness of support programs across the state. This new designation underscores Canopy’s commitment to protecting and nurturing children, ensuring they grow up in safe and supportive environments.

Over the past two decades, Canopy has progressively expanded its upstream service delivery to better meet the needs of children and families. Starting in the early 1990s with psychiatric residential treatment, Canopy has developed a range of preventive services, including day treatment, outpatient solutions, and in-home and wraparound services. In education, Canopy has evolved from providing schools for children in psychiatric residential care to o!ering school day programs and special purpose schools for speci"c learning challenges. Our family support solutions have similarly advanced from intensive in-home solutions and therapeutic foster care to comprehensive family preservation and reuni"cation services, aiming to prevent children from entering state custody and supporting their safe return to their families. Despite achieving a 97-98% success rate for over a decade, we sought to go even further upstream by launching our LINK solution to resource families at risk of Child Protection Services (CPS) intervention before abuse or neglect calls ever reach CPS.

This designation is a testament to our strategic commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect before it occurs.

The pinwheel, symbolizing PCAA, serves as a visual reminder of our commitment to creating a world where all children can grow up happy, healthy and prepared to succeed.

PCAA envisions a world where all children and families live

purposeful, happy lives with hope for the future.

5 Year Strategic Plan 2023-2027

Canopy engaged the Monitor Institute by Deloitte for a three-phased strategic planning process to help the organization build a shared understanding of where we are today, make key decisions around Canopy’s new strategy, and build an operational plan to support our new strategy.

PHASE ONE:

BUILDING UNDERSTANDING

PHASE TWO:

FRAMING AND MAKING CHOICES

PHASE THREE:

OPERATIONAL PLANNING

Canopy’s Opportunity and Aspiration

We want to expand our work in Mississippi, stay on the leading edge of innovative best-practices, and proactively pursue partnerships to meet children where they are.

  • CANOPY’S 3 STRATEGIC PILLARS

We will improve access to high-quality care and expand Canopy’s reach by pursuing three key priorities:

    • Canopy will seek to be a leader in driving innovation in mental wellness by developing a robust process for exploring innovative ideas; evaluating ideas for feasibility, impact, and financial viability; and adapting internal structures, processes, and resourcing to steward new innovations from concept to launch.

    • Canopy will expand its sphere of influence by pursuing strategic partnerships that will result in increased reach and access to high-quality care in Mississippi, starting by exploring potential partnerships to meet children where they are – first in schools and then in pediatricians’ offices.

    • Canopy will invest in capabilities to enhance our e!ectiveness in the rapidly changing healthcare landscape. Specifically, we will build our measurement, data, and learning capabilities and our clinical expertise to stay on the leading edge of practice, and invest in communications to drive name recognition, raise awareness of services and gain referrals.

Over the next five years, we will:

Over the next five years, we will:

1.

REACH MORE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

2.

LEAD THE WAY ON MENTAL WELLNESS INNOVATION

3.

CATALYZE TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE IN THE SECTOR

4.

ENSURE FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

5.

EQUIP THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

YEAR 1 UPDATES

In 2023, we embarked on our comprehensive five-year strategic plan focused on three core pillars: Pursuing New Growth, Building The Canopy and Strengthening Our Roots. To enhance our organizational effectiveness, we invested in improving measurement, data, learning, clinical expertise, communications, and digital transformation eforts. Notably, we successfully transferred our 20 Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) Certificate of Need (CON) beds to our Jackson Campus, with the intent to create Mississippi's first comprehensive trauma center. This significant step marks our commitment to deepening our clinical expertise and staying at the forefront of best practices to address unprecedented challenges.

Significant progress has also been made in expanding our sphere of influence through strategic partnerships. By moving beyond transactional vendor relationships to transformational partnerships with business partners, foundation supporters, donors, and key stakeholders, we have enhanced our ability to deliver high-quality solutions to children where they are, such as in schools and pediatrician’s o$ces. These partnerships are crucial in providing the second-order change solutions needed at this critical moment, enabling us to make a tangible impact on the lives of children and families in Mississippi.

We have been intentional in driving innovation and growth through a systematic process. In 2023, we mapped our innovation and growth process, which guides ideas from concept to scaling. This process includes building a value proposition, designing a pilot implementation, launching the idea, and finally scaling it, with clearly defined feasibility stages at each step. This approach empowers us to exercise both fanatic discipline and empirical creativity, ensuring that we continue to grow and re-imagine mental wellness for the future.

Developmentally, we are right where we should be. Embracing the premise that “more can do more,” we have empowered more people at more levels in the organization to define and own the operational goals that align with our strategic pillars. This deep work has involved defining strategic key performance indicators (KPIs) for each level to align with our three strategic pillars. For example, under Strengthening Our Roots, we exceeded our fundraising goals, achieved our goal for cash in reserve, purchased property for CARES School Hattiesburg's new location, and exceeded annual retention rates. For Building the Canopy, we served over 8,200 children and their families, surpassing our goal. Pursuing New Growth saw success in securing $5.6M in tax credit support, establishing a new legislative team, and conducting legislative meetings and tours with approximately 100 legislators and members of Congress.

The investments made in this first year to create a robust plan for people, processes and technology will be foundational as we press into 2024.

ASPEN INSTITUTE HEALTH INNOVATION MEGAVENTURE

Inspired and supported by the larger Aspen community, a vision was cast to overcome this mental health crisis by tech-enabling the science of hope. Joining forces, the three founding network partners — Canopy Children’s Solutions, Get Well, and Learn to Live — created Canopy Anywhere, which is the first technology-enabled service network that transforms care management and delivers personalized, holistic youth mental health and well-being at scale. This tech-enabled service layer proactively brings youth and families a comprehensive portfolio of resources from wellness to self-guided digital programs or direct access to critical crisis resources when needed. Collectively, these three organizations serve more than 10 million individuals annually.

BREAKTHROUGH STRATEGIC COLLABORATION

Canopy Anywhere provides a breakthrough paradigm for youth well-being and mental health by providing:

  • tech-enabled outreach, screening &care navigation
  • evidence-based hope scien
  • self-guided digital resources

VISION FOR CANOPY ANYWHERE

The vision for Canopy Anywhere is to provide a comprehensive mental health solution for every Mississippi youth through proactive, tech-enabled outreach, screening and care navigation. This initiative includes access to self-guided digital resources, coaching and curated physical resources. Canopy Anywhere synthesizes our strategic pillars by driving deeper digital transformation, forging key transformational partnerships with technology leaders, and pursuing growth through innovative solutions. This unique integration of "high-tech" and "high-touch" o!ers a scalable, coordinated and holistic portfolio of resources for every child in Mississippi and beyond.

KEY PILOT METRICS

Our pilot schools in Madison County have yielded encouraging yet concerning data. We are thrilled with the high activation rates among youth (81%) and the completion rates of the Hope survey (89%). Additionally, 78% of participating parents completed our Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) screener. The data revealed that 20% of youth need immediate support for issues like suicidal ideations, depression, anxiety and self-harming behaviors, while 46% of caregivers face immediate need for additional support for challenges like housing, food insecurity and personal safety concerns. This work has garnered positive attention at national conferences and among various stakeholders, highlighting the necessity of this innovative solution to e!ect second-order change and provide hope for the future of our children.

The Table Talks initiative was created to provide a safe and inclusive space for employees to engage in meaningful conversations and learn about diverse cultures. Facilitated by a member of the Culture and Engagement council, these sessions encouraged attendees to share their experiences, raising awareness and fostering mutual understanding.

  • Food Trucks

Over the summer of 2023, Culture and Engagement organized food trucks offering a variety of cuisine from barbecue to Southern fried catfish at each community o!ce for the first time, bringing everyone together through food and fellowship.

Best Me IN 2023

In 2023, Canopy’s Employee Wellness Program launched its "Be the Best Me in 2023" wellness campaign to guide employees toward greater wellbeing at work, at home and in the community. This initiative included monthly live events centered around speci"c wellness themes and challenges, featuring guest speakers and opportunities for team engagement. Each month, employees gathered virtually to discuss the challenge results and participate in wellness activities, fostering a supportive and interactive environment.

Led by inspiring and motivating Wellness Champions across the organization, the 2023 wellness topics covered a wide range of areas including self-care, "nancial literacy, work-life harmony, nutrition, social media impact, preventative care, trauma, mental health awareness and more. These comprehensive topics aimed to address various aspects of employees' lives, helping them to build resilience, maintain a healthy work-life balance and improve their overall mental and physical health. By focusing on these areas, Canopy is committed to creating a healthier, more supportive workplace where every employee can thrive and “Be the Best Me”.

YOUTH AMBASSADORS

This year’s Youth Ambassador Program, themed "Be the Best Me," welcomed 161 students from grades 9-12, across seven Canopy offices in Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Meridian, Olive Branch, Tupelo, and Starkville. The program was supported by 21 dedicated Canopy staff members who volunteered as mentors, facilitating six engaging meetings across the fall and spring semesters. The program provided a platform for youth to see themselves as leaders in their communities, promoting change and mental wellness. Crystal Watson, Learning & Development Coordinator highlighted the empowerment aspect, saying it helped the youth see themselves as leaders, while Alesha McQuarters, in-CIRCLE Therapist, emphasized the importance of engaging with youth on mental health topics.

One of the standout stories and Mission Moments from this year’s program came from the Hattiesburg Youth Ambassador group, which, despite having only four students, achieved remarkable success. Initially shy and reluctant to participate, one student gradually opened up over the course of the meetings, ultimately becoming vibrant and communicative. Facilitator Charlesia Means, in-CIRCLE Supervisor played a crucial role in this transformation, implementing coping mechanisms and ensuring the student received appropriate therapeutic services. By the third meeting, the student was actively participating and forming bonds with her peers. This transformation underscored the program’s impact, fostering strong relationships and personal growth. The program also celebrated a senior who not only graduated high school but also completed courses at Pearl River Community College with honors. This year’s Youth Ambassador Program truly demonstrated Canopy’s core values of relationship building, inclusivity, and the power of providing a supportive community for mental wellness.

TRANSFORMING LIVES

One Child at a Time

For over a century, Canopy has been dedicated to identifying and addressing the evolving challenges faced by children and youth. Our mission is to create comprehensive solutions that transform lives and enable children to thrive. At the heart of our e!orts lies Canopy’s CareNET, a system of integrated care that ensures a child can move seamlessly from one solution to another while staying under the supportive umbrella of Canopy. This continuum of care is designed to provide consistent, deep, and impactful support, embodying our commitment to the children and families we serve.

The concept of a continuum of care at Canopy means that each child receives tailored and comprehensive services that address their unique needs. For one child, this could translate to 20 hours of ABA therapy a week, a full academic year of support, or resources extended to their entire family. It may involve intensive psychiatric care for three to six months at our psychiatric residential treatment facility or working closely with a family to ensure reuni"cation or preservation, emphasizing that the safest place for a child to thrive is within a healthy home environment. For a child who has been a victim of violent crime, it means receiving a forensic interview, therapy and advocacy, ensuring their voice is heard and their healing journey is supported.

The number "one" at Canopy signifies much more than a single entity; it represents a ripple effect that creates brighter futures for the children we serve, fosters positive and healthy relationships within families, and contributes to the betterment of communities. Each child we help has the potential to inspire lasting generational change, embodying the profound impact of our solutions. Through our expert and compassionate care, we are hopeful and committed to making a transformative di"erence, always prioritizing the voices and needs of our children and families.
