Eligibility for Potential Adoptive Families
Adoption is a life-changing journey that can bring immense happiness to your family as well as the child you’re welcoming home. Canopy Children’s Solutions (Canopy) walks alongside adoptive parents to help guide them through the process of adopting a child.
Potential parents who adopt through Canopy must meet certain requirements:
Age
At the time of the initial application, applicants must be at least 21 years of age and not older than 45 years of age for an infant adoption. Applicants may be older for a special needs adoption.
Marital Status
Applicants can be either a single person or a couple legally married for a minimum of 2 years.
Residence
Applicants must be legal citizens of the United States and residents of the state of Mississippi. Applicant’s home must have adequate space and meet safety standards as required by Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services (MDCPS).
Financial Status
Applicants must have a minimum income of $20,000, have sufficient income to adequately provide for a child, and have medical and life insurance. Income must be above the poverty level as determined by MDCPS guidelines.
Health
Applicants will be examined by a physician to ensure that they are physically able to meet the needs of a child. Persons with physical disabilities will not be discriminated against but must be able to physically care for their children.
Criminal Record Clearance
Applicants must have criminal background checks (local and FBI) done prior to the initial home visit. A minimum of four references by non-relatives is required prior to the initial home visit.
