Passionate Volunteers Making a Difference
The Canopy Auxiliary is a group of passionate volunteers in the Jackson area dedicated to making a difference for children in Mississippi.
supporting canopy’s mission
The Auxiliary provides the community with a way to directly support Canopy’s mission. Auxiliary volunteers can interact and make personal connections with children served by the agency through a variety of social and developmental activities offered throughout the year. The Auxiliary also plays an integral part of Canopy’s fundraising efforts by spearheading the annual Jackson Wine Tasting held each spring. In addition to volunteering, members have several opportunities to build camaraderie within the group during the Auxiliary’s annual social events.
- Halloween Party
- Social Butterflies Autism Program
- The 24 Nights of Christmas (Reading Program)
- Christmas Wishes
- Mardis Gras Party
- Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction Fundraiser
Auxiliary membership includes annual dues of $75 and participation in at least one fundraising or campus involvement activity. Committees meet as needed to discuss upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
History of the Auxiliary
Not long after Mississippi Children’s Home Society (now Canopy Children’s Solutions) was founded in 1912, the Auxiliary was created with the purpose of helping provide comfort and joy to the children. They were also instrumental in the public awareness of the agency and its efforts. The women of the Auxiliary presented Christmas gifts and sponsored Easter egg hunts for the children. They also chaperoned field trips to the zoo or local parks. In order to fund these efforts, the Auxiliary conducted quilt sales and other fundraising events, and each member paid 25 cents per month in dues. The funds were used “to help [the children] enjoy a normal childhood while they are in the Home waiting to be placed in family homes.”
The Ladies Auxiliary has been active at various times throughout the years. During the Great Depression, for instance, it disbanded because members could not afford the monthly dues. It was reestablished, however, in 1940 to continue its mission to help support and the children of Canopy.
In 2004, a revitalized Auxiliary formed with an expanded purpose. The Canopy Auxiliary now helps with fundraising, volunteer activities, entertainment, and social engagement with children across various programs within the Canopy organization.
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time – they have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew
