During more than a century of service to Mississippi’s children, Canopy has been fortunate to have five CEOs who have devoted many years to our organization. This stable leadership has enabled Canopy to remain steadfast in its mission. Our current leadership team includes the following dedicated individuals, each with a passion for helping the under-served children of Mississippi.
Meet Our Senior Management Team
John D. Damon, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer
John’s clinical and executive leadership experience spans more than 25 years. Joining Canopy in 1993, he began as a therapist at the CARES Center Jackson. He went on to become Clinical Director and serve in the capacity of CARES Center Director and Chief Operating Officer before transitioning to CEO in 2013. As the primary public figure for the organization, John plays a critical role in fostering relationships between Canopy and other leading healthcare providers, political entities and professional thought leaders and organizations.
He is president of the Mississippi Association of Child Caring Agencies, past president and board member for the National Association for Children’s Behavioral Health in Washington, D.C., and past president of the board of directors for the Behavioral Health Society of the Mississippi Hospital Association. In 2013 he was appointed to the Mississippi Autism Advisory Committee and serves on the Mississippi Children’s Justice Commission. He has also served on other committees including the Governor’s Healthcare Task Force, the Mental Health Task Force (chair), and Mississippi’s Children’s Mental Health Task Force. John has taught as an adjunct professor in both undergraduate and graduate academic institutions and has presented to the U.S. Senate Caucus Committee as well as state, regional and national audiences on foster care, mental health and substance abuse. John is a published author where his work has appeared in numerous books and peer reviewed journals for children’s behavioral health.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Mississippi College, a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary, and earned his doctorate in Philosophy in Clinical Psychology from Jackson State University. He completed his residency in Child Psychology at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
John and his wife are proud parents of five children. They attend Broadmoor Baptist Church and reside in Madison, Mississippi.
Terry L. Hight, Ph.D.
Chief Operations Officer
Terry’s career includes more than 15 years of operational management experience and expertise in the behavioral health and social services environment. As COO, Terry directs daily operations of the company to ensure the behavioral health, educational and social services solutions work together toward the common purpose of creating permanent, loving homes for children and yielding transformational results. Additionally, he oversees the direction of the Quality & Evaluation and Information Technology departments. He also serves as part of the national board of directors for the Children’s Home Society of America.
Terry is a Licensed Psychologist and has been with Canopy since 2001. Prior to joining Canopy, Terry was part of a management consulting firm in Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Mississippi College, a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary. Terry was a Phi Kappa Phi graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where he holds a Master of Science degree and a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology.
Terry and his wife are the proud parents of three children. He is an active member of his local community with involvement in the leadership of Boy Scout Troop 8 at First Baptist Church of Jackson. He and his family reside in Flowood, Mississippi.
Angela (Angie) L. Sumrall, MBA, CPA, CFE
Chief Financial Officer
Angie brings more than 30 years of accounting experience to Canopy’s executive leadership. Angie’s primary role is to uphold the fiscal integrity of the company by overseeing financial matters including federal, state and local grants management; budgeting; financial reporting; tax and audit functions; capital campaign fiscal management and planning; financial compliance management; forecasting and special projects. In addition to finance, she also oversees the direction of Canopy’s Facilities, Training, Admissions and Human Resources departments.
Angie joined Canopy in 1999. Before that, she ran the Small Business Division for a Jackson-area CPA firm. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Mississippi College with emphasis in accounting and is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, and a Senior Professional in Human Resources.
Angie and her husband are proud parents to two daughters. They are active members of Fondren Church in Jackson and reside in Clinton, Mississippi.
Tammy Amis, MBA
Chief of Staff
Tammy brings to the executive leaders expertise from more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare field, with more than half being in not-for-profit healthcare administration. She is a dynamic leader with an unsurpassed ability to coordinate organizational strategy, develop resource, and mobilize key stakeholders in order to connect a vision with the necessary resources for project fruition. As Chief of Staff, Tammy serves as the organization’s liaison between the Chief Executive Office and high-level external contacts as well as sustains the cooperative relationship between the company and Canopy’s Board of Directors. She oversees the day-to-day operations of the Public Relations and Development departments and is instrumental in the company’s marketing, planning and outreach initiatives.
Tammy joined the Canopy administration in 2013 following a career with a Jackson-area hospital. Tammy is a graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering, minoring in Mathematics. She went on to obtain her Master’s in Business Administration from the Else School of Management at Millsaps College. Tammy also holds a Lean Sigma Six certification.
Tammy is a wife and mother to three girls. She is active in her local community through educational and recreational organizations. She and her family are devoted members to Broadmoor Baptist Church and are residents of Madison, Mississippi.
Taheti Watson, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
Chief Engagement & Diversity Officer
Taheti Watson has over 15 years of experience in human resources, leadership development and employee engagement. She is responsible for building and developing a strong, inclusive team that lives Canopy’s Core Values. Taheti helps Canopy attract, develop, and retain exceptional, diverse team members that are committed to making a positive and sustained impact on the children, families and communities Canopy serves.
Taheti joined Canopy in 2011. She holds a Bachelor in Management from Belhaven University and a Masters in Workforce Development from The University of Southern Mississippi. Taheti is a Certified Senior Professional in Human Resources through the Human Capital Institute (SPHR) and through the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM –SCP).
Taheti’s personal mission is “each one, reach one.” She lives in Clinton, Mississippi with her husband. They have three grown children.
SHEA HUTCHINS, LCSW
Chief Solutions Officer
Shea Hutchins’ career spans over 20 years including both clinical and administrative leadership experience. As Canopy Children’s Solutions’ Chief Solutions Officer, Shea oversees day-to-day operations and direction of the organization’s statewide continuum of services which, includes the state’s most comprehensive array of children’s behavioral health, educational and social service solutions as well as oversight of admissions and medical staff. Her role within the executive team helps to disseminate information about strategic goals throughout the organization as well as the implementation of new programs through strategic initiatives. Shea is instrumental in helping to identify and develop talent within Canopy staff turning strong workers into organizational leaders.
Much of Shea’s experience was carefully nurtured and developed through different roles within the organization. Shea joined the Canopy in 2002 as a clinical therapist for CARES Center Jackson. She went on to become the CARES Clinical Director and, shortly thereafter, was promoted to Residential Division Director. In 2011, Shea left to pursue a position with Rankin County School District as a General Education Behavior Specialist allowing her to spend more time with her family. Shea returned to Canopy in 2014 as the Senior Director of Operations. She was named Chief Solutions Officer in January 2018.
Shea holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Mississippi College and a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Alabama. She completed two years post-graduate clinical supervision to obtain her license in Clinical Social Work.
Shea and her husband are proud parents to two children. She is active in her children’s sports ventures and is herself a fitness enthusiast promoting the benefits of a healthy mind and body. She and her family reside in Clinton, Mississippi.
