Canopy Children’s Solutions’ New Core Value Recognizes Strength in Differences

Canopy Children’s Solutions’ (Canopy) mission is to help children thrive and families overcome extraordinary challenges by providing a continuum of behavioral health, educational, and social service solutions. Through our core values, we are able to stay true to this mission, and provide the best services to children and families across Mississippi. Canopy’s four core values define day-to-day actions and decision-making at every level in the organization.

During Canopy’s 2020 Annual Retreat, employees were asked to revisit the core values and to reflect on the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. After much brainstorming and collaboration, a new core value was formed. A team made up of Canopy’s executive leadership, Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Council, public relations and development departments, and Board DEI Committee worked hard to ensure the new core value reflected the employee’s collective voices.

“I am grateful for our team’s relentless pursuit to build vulnerability-based trust so that healthy conflict can demand commitment, invite accountability and achieve results. These organizational health muscles have proven to be the accelerator of all things organizationally smart – disciplined people with disciplined thought taking disciplined action to build greatness to last,” said John Damon, Ph.D., Canopy CEO. “On this foundation of being ‘healthy and smart,’ we have been able to achieve unprecedented levels of employee engagement through a multi-pronged approach and most critically through our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work. Although we still have a long way to go, I am grateful we began to overcome initial inertia and turn the flywheel of trust many years ago so that we can accelerate these revolutions though our DEI efforts.”

“We hope employees know they have a voice, a sense of connection and feel that they are a part of an environment that values them individually and collectively,” said Canopy’s Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer Taheti Watson.

Canopy’s new core value is – Relationships matter and our differences make us stronger.

Canopy’s new value supports the overall mission, strategies, and practices to develop a diverse work force that incorporates a variety of perspectives, backgrounds and experiences while improving decision-making and leveraging the positive impacts of diversity. This new value represents a commitment to create pathways and stimulate an inclusive work environment by promoting learning, empathy and sensitivity, while reducing unconscious bias, prejudice, and stigma. It means embracing every employee’s uniqueness and talents.

“Canopy understands that focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion isn’t just a box to check,” said Watson. “Job seekers and employees want to work for and create an organization that has a genuine commitment to these principles, not only for the advancement of the organization’s mission, but for a sense of value and belonging for the world around them.”

Canopy is committed to being a great place to work and embracing every child and their family by giving our very best.

Canopy Children’s Solutions’ core values are:

  • The voice of our children and families always comes first.
  • Relationships matter and our differences make us stronger.
  • We take great joy in service to others.
  • Our families and our communities deserve our very best.
